Ingredients

  • 1 package (17.3 oz) puff pastry frozen, 2 sheets, thawed
  • 0.5 cup Nutella
  • 1 egg large
  • 1 tsp water

Equipment

  • 1 large baking sheet

Method

  1. Heat the oven to 400°F and line a large baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. Place one pastry sheet on the prepared baking sheet.
  3. Spread the Nutella evenly over the pastry sheet, leaving a 1/2-inch border.
  4. Top with the second sheet.
  5. With a sharp knife, cut the pastry into a tree shape with a centered trunk and a triangle about 8 inches wide at the base.
  6. Cut 1-inch-wide branches from each side toward the center, stopping about 1 inch short to leave a central spine.
  7. Twist each branch twice.
  8. Beat the egg with the water in a small bowl.
  9. Brush the mixture over the pastry.
  10. Bake for 18 to 22 minutes, until puffed and golden brown.
  11. Let the pastry tree rest on the baking sheet for 5 minutes before serving.

Notes

For neat branches, keep the pastry cold while shaping. Store leftovers covered in the refrigerator for up to 3 days; freezing is possible, though the pastry may lose some crispness. For a dairy-free option, use a dairy-free chocolate hazelnut spread.
