Method
Cook the bacon
- Cook the bacon in a large skillet over medium heat, turning as needed, until crisp, 8 to 12 minutes.
- Drain the bacon on paper towels.
- Once cool enough to handle, chop the bacon finely.
Assemble the cracker base
- Heat the oven to 350°F.
- Line a rimmed 13x18-inch baking sheet with foil.
- Grease the foil.
- Arrange the saltine crackers in a single layer on the prepared baking sheet, fitting them closely together.
Make the maple caramel and bake
- Combine the butter, brown sugar, maple syrup, and salt in a 2-quart saucepan.
- Bring the mixture to a full boil over medium heat, stirring until the butter melts and the mixture is combined.
- Boil for 3 minutes, stirring constantly.
- Immediately pour the caramel over the crackers.
- Spread the caramel evenly over the crackers.
- Sprinkle the chopped bacon evenly over the caramel-coated crackers.
- Bake for 8 to 10 minutes, until the caramel is bubbling across the pan.
- Cool completely on the baking sheet, about 1 hour.
- Break into bite-size pieces.
Notes
For the crispest pieces, let the crackers cool completely before breaking them. Store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 5 days; freeze for up to 2 months. For a gluten-free option, use gluten-free saltine-style crackers.
